Public Bike Programs Becoming More Popular

With San Antonio stepping aboard the “Go Green” train, other cities are coming along for the ride. Houston is one of the cities which have taken the green initiative to save energy and resources. Like San Antonio, Houston has now also adopted the Public Bike Share Program.

The Public Bike Share Program was built for those trips around the city that are too short to drive, but too long to walk. You no longer have to be stuck in traffic for wanting to visit the farmers’ market. If you live close enough to ride a bike to work, this program just may become your new best friend.

The bikes in the program are equipped with amazing technology, which is easy to use. The “B-cycles” are specially designed for all riders, no matter how short or tall. They come with adjustable seats fenders, skirt guards and chain guards to keep clothes clean. Automatic lights help keep night side riders safe.

The bikes also come equipped with a basket which can be filled with various things such as groceries or dinner. Along with the baskets comes a lock which can be used to lock up the bike anywhere, even if a kiosk is nowhere to be found. If you plan to use these bikes for exercising purposes, you will be pleased to know that they are equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFI) and GPS technology.

So, how much does this cost? Memberships vary to satisfy all sorts of customers, from the one-time users all the way to the everyday user. They provide daily, weekly and annual memberships. Members will be granted unlimited access to the bikes. Annual memberships can be yours for $60. If you don’t want to get a membership, there are also one-time rental fees. In San Antonio, 24 hours costs $10.

The Public Bike Share Program will continue to grow, and bikes are being added every day. It will not be long until it reaches all of Texas, in which we will all be taking a step forward a green and energy-saving future! Check out this website for more details.

(The San Antonio Energy Champions program is an energy-efficiency initiative started by Champion AC in San Antonio. It focuses on sharing tips on living a green life, educating elementary children about our community’s energy needs, cutting down on our environmental footprint and saving both money and energy at home.)
