Clubs on the Green Scene

There are plenty of clubs around San Antonio, each with its own unique concept. It comes as no surprise that there are some clubs that focus on saving energy and the environment. Locally, the University of Texas at San Antonio plays host to a number of these clubs.

The Green Society is one of the few organizations that’s main focus is centered on saving energy and the environment. They are the oldest “green” organization on campus and focus on educating and promoting a green standard of living. They have been known to take in projects such as “Think outside the bottle,”, which is a petition to get rid of all the water vending machines on campus and promote the use of reusable bottles and filters. They set up a table from Tuesday through Thursday everyday day on campus and educate students about how they can make a difference.

R^3, also known as Roadrunners for Renewable Resources is another energy-saving club. This group was recently formed, their mission is to educate and pass on the practices of using renewable resources to others. Their main focus revolves around energy and the many ways to reuse and preserve. For example, they have been known to donate a box full of things that could be up-cycled to Aramark. This stuff goes on to become anything from a purse to a backpack.

The Movement is another organization which is based on the idea of “change.” They believe they can change anything as long as we take small step towards that change. They are more of an action group, where they take matters into their own hands and get their hands dirty if need be. They do a lot of community services and projects that help out the environment and help preserve energy. For example, they made it so all UTSA campus printers have been set to default to double-sided printing in order to save paper.

These are a few of the clubs found on the UTSA campus, but you can rest assured there are many more across San Antonio with similar goals. You could be living just a couple of streets away from an organization that you would be able to join, so what are you waiting for?! Get out there, and make a difference!

(The San Antonio Energy Champions program is an energy-efficiency initiative started by Champion AC in San Antonio. It focuses on sharing tips on living a green life, educating elementary children about our community’s energy needs, cutting down on our environmental footprint and saving both money and energy at home.)
